Chapter 21

The snowfall intensified. It was a full-blown nor’easter-style blizzard by the time the fireside chat was over. Rebecca stood next to the fireplace and clapped to get everyone’s attention.

“Quick announcement. I’ve just been informed that the roads have been closed due to the snowfall. We probably won’t be able to leave on time tomorrow. So sit tight. Many of the activities on the morning schedule may not take place as planned. Please stay at the resort until breakfast, when we’ll be sharing updates about the storm. Right now the forecast has snow and ice for all of tomorrow, so we will have to evaluate when we will be able to safely return home.”

“I don’t mind staying,” Andy said. “Is there a better place to get trapped? I don’t think so.”

“That’s because you have all the comforts of home here. Sophie’s hat, your amazing boyfriend, the hot chocolate bar—it’s basically paradise,” Revi said.

“I’ll have to miss practice with Tyson,” Jonas grumbled. “It’s such a critical time.”

“I think one day will be okay,” Revi said.

“Spoken like someone who is not trying to be a world-famous musician.”

“True. I aspire for mediocrity and a life of anonymity. Those are the keys to happiness, I’m told.”

My phone buzzed and I pulled it out from my pocket and answered. “Hello?”

“Sophie? It’s Maureen.” My stomach twisted. Maureen wouldn’t call after ten on a Saturday night unless something was wrong.

“What’s going on, Maureen?” The fear in my voice was palpable. Jonas looked over, and Revi put a hand on my arm.

“I know it’s late, honey,” she said. “Your dad had a fall. He hit his head and is a little disoriented. We think he might have broken his arm. We’re taking him over to Mass General.”

My hand went to my mouth and tears flooded my eyes, hot and plentiful. “He’s disoriented? Did he lose consciousness?”

“No, no. He’s awake. He didn’t pass out, but he’s a bit confused. It could be the pain from his arm. I think he’d feel better if you were here.”

“But I’m in Vermont,” I said, my voice tight and high. “And there’s a blizzard here. They’ve closed the roads.” The tears spilled and rolled down my cheeks. I swiped them away, suddenly embarrassed that I was crying in front of everyone. I stood up and stepped away from the group. “Is he there? Can I talk to him?”

“Sure, Sophie. They said the ambulance would be here in a few minutes. I’ll put you on speaker for him.”

“Dad,” I said, trying to smooth the quaver out of my voice. “Daddy, are you there?”

“Sunny,” he groaned. My face contorted. He didn’t sound like Dad. He sounded like someone else.

“Maureen said you had a fall.”

“My arm hurts, Sunny.”

“I know, Dad. I’m so sorry. I wish I could be there with you.”

“Will you take me home? I want to go home.”

I sucked in a jagged breath. Our home was gone. He was home. “I can’t come, Dad. It’s snowing here and I can’t get there. But Maureen called an ambulance and they’ll make your arm feel better and get you checked out.
